About the Web Site.
Boinkin Chipmunks is not about content. It is about testing structure,
code, technique and technologies. The content is compliant XHTML 1.1 and,
depending upon the DTD
used, XHTML 1.0 Strict compliant. The content is served with an
application/xhtml+xml MIME type on browsers
that support this specific MIME.
It should be clearly noted that I am neither a designer nor a developer.
This Web site, as in all of my personal Web sites over the years, is used
as a learning tool for myself.
The Basis for the Web Site.
A Microsoft ASP.NET
template was used as a basis for creating this content. This site and the
template have very few design similarities. The code behind has also been
changed.
Changes were necessary to bring the template into standards compliance
and to accommodate personal design taste and site functionality. Not all
of the changes in semantic structure that should have been made were made.
The same applies to the use of Cascading Style Sheets. Some of the code
within the style sheets needed to adapt to the non–semantic structure
of portions of the code.
It is never advisable to use someone else's work product such as
Microsoft's template. All you are doing, in the end, is buying into
that developer's/designer's problems. It is much more efficient and
prudent to start from scratch.
However, the high points and important things within semantics have
been met. Over time, changes will continue to be made in improvements
to the site's structure.
Content Rating of the Site.
The entire Web site has been classified as ‘Mature’ content
within its meta tags and with use of the PICS
and ICRA
classifications.
Use of such classification and content rating systems should be a
‘Best Practice’ used for all Web sites. This includes content
that is suitable for a general audience regardless of age.
Browser Compatibility.
The Web site has been designed for current modern browsers, only.
Current browsers are defined as the current major release of any
Web browser.
Internet Explorer version 6.0, and below, are not current modern
browsers and present substantial security risks to their users. These
browsers are not supported. Okay, so the content supports IE6 a little,
but not much.
Text only browsers, such as Lynx, are supported.
Cascading Style Sheet development to support hand–held devices
has not, yet, been implemented.
Graphics.
The majority of graphics on this site are in the PNG 8 format. Time was
not taken to squeeze out every possible bit of data within the image
to bring the image down to its most smallest possible file size.
The image file sizes are close enough.
Imagery in design helps to establish perception. Perception is an
important part of communication. The established perception of this site
is personal and for my view and no one else's. That viewpoint will partially explain
my choice of photography that has been used. Women are truly remarkable
creatures. Besides, I am still that boinkin guy and it is in the jeans.
Deal with it.
Accessibility.
This Web site is also about test production of the WCAG 1.0 Priority
3 Accessible content. More detailed information on standards and accessibility
is available on the
W3C standards and
accessibility compliance content of Boinkin Chipmunks.
Long Descriptions.
Long descriptions and ‘D’ links have been provided for all
necessary content segments. This includes audio and video content
segments within the site. Closed captions have been developed for all
audio and is used as part of the long description and within the
accessibility best practices. Closed captions for video is under
development.
Theme Selection.
User theme selection is being implemented within the
content. Four themes are available:
- The Standard Design Theme.
- A Black on White Linear Theme.
- A Black on Green Linear Theme.
- A White on Black Linear Theme.
These themes allow the user to select the best contrast suitable for
their needs and requirements. The linear themes allow the user to magnify
and/or increase the text size to any level without a necessary increase
in the viewport of the content. However, within certain browsers that
increase both text size and image size, a horizontal scroll bar may
appear to accomodate a magnified image that expands beyond the viewport
of the browser. In such cases, the text does remain within the viewport.
JavaScript and Plug-ins.
For certain content pages, plug-ins may be required to view a particular
content segment. Those content segments have been designed for use of
reputable and highly distributed plug-ins, e.g. Adobe Flash Player,
Adobe Reader, Quicktime audio.
When such plug-ins are required, adjacent links for download and
installation of the plug-in are provided. Whenever practical and
feasible, alternate content for such content segments is provided that
does not require the use of the plug-in.
JavaScript is used on a limited basis. It is used for certain
navigation functions. The content, however, is not dependent upon
JavaScript to successfully and efficiently navigate the site.
Custom Document Type Definitions.
The XHTML 1.1 DTD
is a custom DTD that is based on the W3C XHTML 1.1
Strict DTD with the addition of the W3C XHTML 1.1 Target Module.
You may view detailed information about the use of the custom XHTML 1.1 DTD
.
This site uses, on occasion, another custom DTD. The custom DTD is a
variant of the W3C
XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD. You may view detailed information about the use of the custom XHTML 1.0 DTD
.
The content, primarily its structure, is constantly reviewed for
possible improvements and efficiencies. This includes use of new
technologies. I am not a believer of using any of the latest technologies
unless the technology improves and adds significant benefit to usability,
efficiencies and site maintenance. The Web, after all, is a communication
medium that must serve the audience. It is not a geek fest for the latest
fad or geek technology branded silliness, e.g. Posh, Web 2.0, AJAX,
Ruby on Drugs, et al.
About that Guy.
Want or interested in some information about that boinkin guy?
Give me a few minutes to mull that over, please.
No.
When I want you to know something about me, I will give you
a call.
Now, go wait by your phone.
Postscript: I have fervently tried, over the years,
to become a “geek” but I can't seem to get that god
damned pocket protector stapled to my chest.
