Function and Purpose of any Privacy Policy.
Privacy policies are an integral part of any Web site. They outline what
information is voluntarily or automatically collected, how such information
is used, under what conditions it is used, access to the information,
procedures required to correct such information and how the information
is protected.
The breadth of a privacy policy is often dictated whether a Web site
must comply with legislative requirements. The Sarbanes Oxley Act, the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the Gramm Leach Bliley
Act, the Child Online Privacy Protection Act, et al, may factor into the
policy's requirements and procedures.
A competent and complex policy should include how any disputes are handled
and what outside independent governing authority will be used to handle such
disputes when necessary.
A P3P Policy
should be developed and included within the site's content. While only
the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser will read the
W3C P3P Policy,
it does provide an alternate method for the Web visitor to easily view
a synopsis of the site's policy and make a decision regarding on how
the browser will handle certain security functions within the Web site.
Beyond the privacy policy, the root is always the methods and systems that have been
developed and implemented to protect and secure the privacy of the visitor.
This not only includes whatever information is transmitted between the client
and the server but it also entails the integrity of the site's code and
applications.
Quality of security, safety and privacy begins with the quality of the code
and the quality and structure of the production server hosting the code.
Internet Retail versus Traditional Retail.
During the last few years, a lot of focus has been given to security and
privacy concerns regarding Internet retailers and business. Much of this focus
has been warranted. Systems, simply, need to be locked down.
The largest of security breaches have, however, occurred from traditional retailers
and business including that of governmental agencies. The most recent TJ Maxx breach
of 45 million of its retail consumers indicates the trend is continuing within
traditional business non-Internet sectors.
A privacy policy should engender Web visitor trust
through a transparent, two-way relationship with its visitors.
